Announcing our new state-of-the-art hybrid theatre

Wednesday 4 September 2019

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside is funding the installation of a new hybrid operating theatre within the hospital.

The new hybrid operating theatre will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure and technology further supporting surgical work already performed in existing operating theatres and cardiac catheter laboratories.

A hybrid operating theatre is a surgical operating theatre equipped with advanced medical imaging devices (devices usually found in a radiology suite or catheter laboratory). It combines the advantages of an operating theatre with high-end imaging to allow multidisciplinary teams of cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons and nurses to treat patients requiring complex surgical work.

The new hybrid operating theatre at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside will be equipped with a robotic C-arm imaging device, which will enable and facilitate pre-procedural planning, intraoperative guidance along with immediate assessment regardless of a patient’s condition or procedural complexity. When in motion, the robotic C-arm imaging device can be moved over or under any part of a patient’s body delivering three-dimensional, high-definition imaging. Surgeons can observe the progress and accuracy of their work on monitors in theatre in real-time.

The new theatre will be approximately 74m2 in size. This is considered much larger than a conventional operating theatre size, but is necessary to accommodate the new and advanced medical infrastructure, as well as ensuring adequate operating space for the team of specialists, who will be treating patients with advanced, complex structural heart and vascular disease in the hybrid operating theatre.

There is a growing need in the community for interventional procedures around cardiovascular disease. The installation of the state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre will help enhance and grow existing cardiac surgical services available at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside, in addition to serving as a platform for endovascular surgical services at the hospital. It will accommodate complex surgical work including advanced cardiac and endovascular clinical procedures.

St Vincent's Private Hospital Northside CEO Daniele Doyle said: “As an acute tertiary hospital we have a commitment to education and improving patient outcomes. Our new state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre will support Queensland’s cardiac care service, as Specialists from our facility work collegially with regional private partners to ensure patients receive the best possible treatment and care."

Building works will commence August 2019 with expected completion June 2020.
